I will be the first to say - I am no beauty guru. I am the 'less is more' kind of girl. Don't get me wrong - I truly admire a good beauty hack. I enjoy trying new lip sticks and finding new sustainable hair care products but hate buying when I am unsure I will love them, that always leads me back to my go-to's... until now.

In my circle of friends, there's an infinite amount of inspiration and talent. In this blog post, I talk about one of those people dear to me and unfold the contents to my new favorite shampoo, simultaneously letting my readers in on my newest hair secret. The catchphrase, "Nice to your hair, better for the earth" summarizes what you are about to read in today's post.

My ambitiously, inventive friend Kyrstin Myhers created her very own Shampoo line called powdü. Kyrstin is the opposite of me with beauty. She has the newest eye-shadow palettes, is constantly aware of the newest products/ brands and is always on the look-out for the most animal-friendly and sustainable products that help our world.

The idea of powdü started in our college house on campus. She has always had a passion for sustainable living and being conscious of what we are consuming as a society. This objective blossomed into her final Senior design project, which then led her to produce a tangible product. During the last semester, she submitted her business proposal to a program called Cy-Starters at Iowa State, this program accelerates those ideas by awarding a scholarship to the chosen proposals. Needless-to-say, she was awarded the funds and today, turned it into a fruitful side-gig!

Powdü is100% plant based and all-natural. And yes, you read the label right - the shampoo itself is in-fact POWDER! I know what you must be thinking... how the heck am I supposed to wash my hair with just powder? Well, one specific fact Kyrstin had shared with me, absolutely blew me away... The sudds and bubbles we get from our shampoo are actually added for that 'clean' sensation we all get when applying and washing the shampoo out! Is your mind blown too?

The tin containers you see in the photo above, are TSA and camping friendly! Perfect for traveling and such a cute addition to your toiletries. Looking at the bigger picture, 92% of Americans use Shampoo. What most of us don't know is that shampoo is 80% water. Therefore, we are all spending quite a bit of money for, essentially... more water. In using powder, it cuts out the unnecessary chemicals in shampoo and allows you access to the nutrients and minerals straight to your scalp for healthier hair.

Below is a list of common ingredients found in other shampoo brands vs. what ingredients are used in powdü...

As consumers, we try to make conscious decisions of what we are putting into our bodies while making sure what we ingest, will be beneficial for our health and the environment. Big corporations are experts at manipulating the labels on the products we use to make them sound more appealing and make it seem like they are 'green'. The United States has less regulations for the labels that we can put on our products compared to other countries. The two certifications companies need to get certified for and pay to use are from the USDA; they accredit a company to be 'organic'. Next, there is the Weeping Bunny, they deem a company on whether or not they are animal-friendly. What is not regulated by the FDA is if something can be labeled all-natural or green. If you ask me that sounds pretty vague.

I wanted to write-out how I have been using powdü for the readers who might be interested in how exactly to use powder shampoo. Disclaimer: This does not mean you have to use it this exact same way. I know other people will take this step in-addition to their regular shampoo routine. Baby steps...

How I use powdü shampoo:

  • Wet your first hand

  • Apply a dime size amount of powder into your hand

  • Set the container off to the side

  • Dampen your second hand

  • Rub hands together in a vertical and circular motion

  • Lather together until small suds and bubbles are visible in your hand

  • Then, gently massage the shampoo into your scalp

  • Start with the top of your head and work your way to the sides behind your ears

  • Next, I grab just a touch more and do the back of my scalp

  • Lastly, I wash my body as it sits, then wash it out by massaging the scalp under the running water

  • After, continue your normal shower routine as usual

If the facts and figures alone didn't sell you, I assure the scents themselves will. The first time I smelled the shampoo, I opened the canister to inhale and as I leaned in, the powder accidentally puffed up and got in my eye - regardless of the irritation I just remember saying, "oh crap, my eye, but wow that smells good!" The purpose behind the three scents Kyrstin used was to support healthy hair and reinforce growth. Secondly, as an inventor, Kyrstin wanted to design a label that was gender neutral - it helps widen her demographic and the consumer can feel comfortable buying/ using the product! Below are photos of each scent/ label along with the corresponding benefits that go with each essence...

Eucalyptus: (What I have been using this month)

  • Stimulates hair growth

  • Helps soothe/ calm scalp

  • Increase overall shine

Lavender:

  • Helps with hair growth

  • Calming sensation

  • Stimulates blood circulation in the scalp

Lemon Ginger:

  • Strengthens hair

  • Promoted hair growth

  • Restores moisture

Within each bottle of the powdü, the powders concentrate equals up to a couple bottles of the generic bottles of shampoo. As I stated above, I only up to about a quarter size amount of powder in my palm each shower to get the same sensation as if I were to use a glob of regular shampoo (I use a lot because I have longer and thicker hair). You can get about 35 washes using that amount.

Since using powdü, I have truly noticed a difference in my hair and am genuinely surprised (in the best way) at how my hair feels healthier! I will say, I have not perfected my method/ routine since adding in this new product. That being said, I am willing to play around because #1. it saves me money, and #2. since we are all still social distancing and slowly stepping out into the world, I have the time to mess around with it. I believe in this product and hope that if you too try powdü, you recognize the same results within your own hair and adopt it into your shower cycle.

I realize all of this sounds like some sort of shampoo commercial, however this is NOT an #ad, I genuinely have been using this shampoo for over a month now and have noticed such positive results!

Now, normally a 40 gram bottle of Powdü costs $16.00 but for the next two weeks, I have an exclusive discount code of 25% off, for my readers who wish to try powdü - any scent of your choice!

Click the Etsy link HERE then copy/paste the code below when you are ready to purchase your new favorite shampoo!

Thank you for taking the time to read about my friend's amazing product, I hope you love it as much as I do! I pray you and your families are all staying safe and remaining in good health! Until next time! And remember, be nice to your hair, and be better to the earth.
