Hello friends! I am back with another set of styling tips that I know is going to be oh-so useful. In this post, I show you how to style a silk slip dress and how you can alter it from a day-to-night look. This slip dress that I wore for styling is a bronze, silk slip dress from a local NYC boutique, DANNIJO . Dannijo was founded by two sisters -- Danielle and Jodie in 2008 here in the city, their business has been booming ever since opening and have been published in many publications. Highly recommend checking them out!

This I feel, is a common issue that just never gets addressed -- customers will buy the elegant piece and when it is time to finally try to wear the slip dress, doubt sets in. Is it too fancy or "out there"? Will I stand out too much? Is it appropriate? After these questions are pondered, the dress gets removed and placed back on the hanger where it will remain...
Realizing this uncomfortableness surrounding a slip dress, I wanted to try and lift some of that stress by sharing my tips and tricks with you all and hope that I can help my readers gain some confidence in wearing something that makes them feel sensational.
Here we go!...
(I truly hope that everyone has been enjoying my mirror pictures, it is difficult to get all of the angles I want to show-off the outfits but I am putting in all of my effort, promise.)
Outfit No. 1

The first tip that I have for anyone when it comes to styling something in your closet is to see if you can layer your piece with anything you may have around! Here, I use one of my favorite turtleneck sweaters to layer underneath the dress for more of a modest look. I went with this tan color to stay monochromatic and style it up with some gold jewelry for some spice! Lastly, I put my hair up in a hair claw, threw on some fall booties and that is all there is to this simple look!

Oh, and this is the perfect way to style a spaghetti strap dress in the winter! To show that better, I just put on one of my cozy, winter trench coats and my black suede tote for an on-the-go look.

In this next look, I wanted to show how this dress could be worn to work. Most people feel that this might be too risky or flashy for work -- I firmly oppose that notion. I accessorized this look with a pair of low, kitten heel sandals, a gold, sparkly knotted headband and large studded earrings. Next, if you have a collared shirt or perhaps some kind of button down, throw that on top and shape it by unbuttoning the bottom couple buttons (if you have them) then, tying the bottom hem in a knot like the picture below. Next, just add a blazer over that and you are ready for work!

*Also, if you have a pair of blue light glasses, make sure you throw those bad boys on too -- protect your eyes!

With this next look, I wanted to show how a slip dress can be worn in a more cozy and casual way on top of the glitz. If you can't tell, I am currently obsessing over anything neutral and earthy tones -- so I wear a lot of tans! I threw on my favorite Tory Sport sweatshirt over my dress and added a pair of mid-calf socks (a beige hue of course) underneath my worn, off-white Vans sneakers. Finally, I finished my look with a pair of simple vintage hoops and a messy bun! Honestly, this was one of my favorite looks due to the sheer comfort and practicality -- running errands is a breeze in this fit!

Next, we have another sweater layering tip! When layering with a dress or skirt that is a solid color, I like to play with pieces in my closet that have more depth or color variations to accentuate and maximize on the entire look. In this case, I chose to go with this black, feathered long sleeve sweater! The feathered hem was the perfect piece to add texture and movement in the look.
A bonus feature within this sweater is the scattered flakes of silver tassels in the bottom hem. Most people don't like mixing gold and earth tones with silvers and cool tones, however I like to make exceptions for myself. Lastly, I stepped into a pair of my Tory Burch mini booties and was ready for an outdoor dinner, picnic in the park or even wine night with the girls!

Now, I know what some of you may be thinking... she just layered a sweater on top in the last look? Yes, I did but never-the-less I wanted to really highlight how incredibly easy it can be to wear a silk slip dress any day, any time! Let us all normalize wearing a slip dress while feeling confident and comfortable in our own skin!
Sorry, I got a tad sidetracked -- for this look I layered an orange, chunky, turtleneck sweater over my slip dress. When layering with larger pieces that lay flat on you and don't give any shape, belt it! I recommend using belts that are meant for shaping and not for holding up your jeans, it will look more natural!
However, I know sometimes we don't have just the perfect belt lying around, so in that case I would recommend using ribbon, lace, or a cute, printed scarf or neckerchief! They can really come in handy in times like these. After belting, ACCESSORIZE! You know I adore my jewelry, have fun with it! I paired a gold belt with a thick gold bangle and some layered, tortoise shell hoop earrings. And finally... I slapped on my go-to chic shoes, Leopard print Manolo's!

Last but certainly not least... the date night look! This ensemble is so easy yet so romantic. The nice thing about slip dresses is that most of the time, they will have adjustable straps that you can raise/ lower the neckline in the front. For a night out, I would definitely recommend lowering that (to your comfort level) and call attention to those collar bones! A pro tip here would be to use necklaces to highlight the area while also covering up some of the open space. As you can see, in the pictures above I use different size chains to create a tier effect.
With a night look, I usually will recommend a leather jacket or bomber jacket to use as a cover-up. They complete a look more-or-less depending on the event. Here, a leather jacket is the way to go and then utilizing the same color shoes on bottom to conclude the outfit!
The final tip I am going to leave you with is about dimensions. Since this piece is longer, I wanted to try and shorten it up for a date night look. Therefore, this would be the perfect opportunity to knot the dress off on the side! This creates slight ruching in the front of the slip and gave me more shape around the hips! (This last tip usually only works if you have a longer slip dress with a slit on the side.)
Thank you all, as always for reading my posts -- I truly had so much fun styling and writing it! I hope this blog post grew your excitement to branch out and wear a slip dress with confidence!
Xo,
SRS
